How to measure an attic stair opening
Gather the opening, height and clearance details that help turn an initial enquiry into a suitable stair configuration.
Measure the opening and the finished height
Useful measurements help a supplier assess whether a retractable attic staircase can fit the property. Record them in millimetres and identify the surfaces you measured. A clear photograph with labelled dimensions is often more useful than a single opening size. Preliminary measurements support selection; they do not replace a professional assessment of the supporting structure.
Measure the clear opening length and width at several positions, because existing openings may not be square. Record any trim or obstruction that reduces the usable opening. Measure the vertical distance from the finished lower floor to the installation reference level, and explain whether floor finishes or ceiling work are still to be completed.

Allow space throughout the movement
Stairs need room while opening and closing as well as when fully deployed. Photograph the entire area below the opening and show obstacles from the side. Identify lights, doors, cabinets, beams and services that may interfere with the movement. The required footprint and movement envelope depend on the chosen model and height; ask for the matching installation drawing.
Wall-mounted and side-mounted configurations require their own measurement approach. Include wall or vertical opening details, the proposed fixing area and the intended landing position. A small ceiling opening does not automatically make a wall-mounted option suitable: the wall and the access route must also be assessed.
Confirm before cutting or ordering
Do not enlarge an opening, remove structural members or choose fixings based solely on a general guide. Have the building structure and proposed installation checked by a competent professional. Share any planned building work with the supplier so the final dimensions and fixing method match the agreed product.
